IUP DEE Visits to Sultan Idris Education University, Malaysia

In order to contribute the internationalization process of Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), 54 students of IUP DEE (International Undergraduate Program Department of Economics Education), 4 lecturers and 4 academic staff conducted an International Project 2018 for students of semester 5 which was held from 24th – 27th July in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Various visits were conducted in several places such as UPSI (University Pendidikan Sultan Idris), Berly’s Chocolate Factory, and KBRI (Embassy of Republic Indonesia) Kuala Lumpur.

One of the great agendas in International Project 2018 was a comparative study with UPSI. The visit was held on July, 25th 2018 in the Faculty of Management and Economics. UPSI was established on 1st May 1997 through the Royal Kingdom of P.U (A) 132 and 133, on 24th February 1997 under two orders namely University Pendidikan Sultan Idris (balad) 1997 and University Pendidikan Sultan Idris (campus) 1997. Previously, the university was known as Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris Tanjung Malim.

The comparative study was filled with exposure by one of the educational staff from UPSI and representative from UNNES. In general there was no significant difference between the education system implemented by UPSI and UNNES. However, in terms of facilities, UPSI has applied technology-based infrastructure, one of them was the smart class. This class was designed specifically for the international class. It was equipped with four screen monitors, smart boards, and benches with a round table arrangement. Moreover, the content of learning in UPSI, especially in Faculty of Management and Economics more stressed on the global and international economy. The interesting thing in UPSI in terms of student affairs was there were many overseas students, both exchange students or students from abroad were studied there. Therefore, learning in UPSI almost entirely uses English in both international or regular class.

From the visit, many things we could learned for the development of learning in IUP DEE both in terms of facilities infrastructure, teachers and student affairs. Not only emphasized form the learning by using English, but the existing learning content must be addressed so that the mindset of students could be directed simultaneously in order to become a prospective teacher who had an ability to asses something either from a regional, national, or global perspectives. In addition, the character values have to improve along with the moral decline of the nation’s children. In UPSI, the university applies the rules in dress by used a special standard uniform, it was different with us, since we only needed to wear polite and neat outfits.

As an international student who held the character values, we should be able to think from various perspectives without leaving our national identity. IUP DEE need to increase cooperation with another universities as well as add international programs so that we could to compete with the international class at other outstanding universities. The activities had a lot of benefit not only for UNNES as the institution but also for students. UNNES is expected to improve facilities and improve the system of teaching and learning such as technical, method matters, media, and etc. So that it will support the vision of UNNES as conservation university with international repute.
