The 2nd IUP Talks of IUP DEE in collaboration with University of Canberra

On Friday, 18th August 2017 in the first floor meeting room Faculty of Economics at 1.30 pm, IUP DEE successfully held the second IUP Talks entitled ”How to Best Prepare Your Doctoral Application and Research Proposal”. This event attended by not only faculty members in Faculty of Economics but also lecturers across faculties at Universitas Negeri Semarang, such as Faculty of Social Science and Faculty of Sports. This event held as a continuation for the academic recharging event which was held first collaborated with Aston University, UK.

Sandy Arief, S.Pd.,M.Sc as an Executive Chairman of IUP DEE in his opening remarks said that IUP DEE is always trying to support faculty members to pursue their doctoral study in their dream universities around the world. One of the ways is by inviting the representative of University of Canberra to know more about the best strategy to prepare doctoral studies.

In this event, the IUP DEE invited Ir. Citta Dinari Sellepan, MappSc from University of Canberra. Moderated by Inaya Sari Melati, S.Pd., M.Pd., Mrs. Citta shared her experiences as in-country representative University of Canberra, Australia to the participants about do and don’t things we should consider in preparing the doctoral application. According to her, the first thing to do to enrol in a university as a research students is finding the professor who is likely to be our supervisor. She said that it is not easy to find a professor whose researches and publicationsare in line with our research proposal. For this case, she also invited one of Alumni University of Canberra from Faculty of Education Universitas Negeri Semarang, Agung Nugroho, S.Pd., M.Ed., to share his extraordinary struggle in getting his doctoral offer letter even from his own alma mater. Furthermore, Mrs. Citta emphasized us that we should have persistency in finding a supervisor. “If you are failed one or two times, than the only thing you have to do is to try again and again,” she said.

She also gave the guidance in developing a research proposal to be more interesting and eye catching for being delivered to the proposed professors. Besides, she also shared many cases about ethics in communicating with professors, admissions, and study agents which are really important to know as even small and informal things sometimes lead to bigger consequences.

The interesting presentation was responded positively by participants. Many participants asked and shared about their experiences and problems in getting a letter of acceptance. An interactive discussion was succeed to inspire all the participants to not stop in pursuing for their doctoral degrees.
